Dorm Disaster Revisited!

When my freshman year roommate Laura (also a blogger) sent me this picture of our dorm room and asked me to do a post with her redesigning it I thought it was a great idea. And I was absolutely HORRIFIED by what I saw. I cannot remember it looking like this- a tapestry with Ralph Lauren floral bedding? Stacked plastic crates? Had I not gotten contacts yet? UGH! What I do remember was that it was the smallest dorm room in history! There wasn't Target, IKEA and the like to allow us to decorate cleverly on a budget. So here is my room re-do utilizing all the amazing resources out there today for parents and kids looking to make their dorm rooms look lovely without going broke (after all, in true college fashion, you'll want to throw oout most of it at the end of the year from it's pure nastiness).

A pair of large graphic chinoiserie (removable) wall decals would go on the slanted ceiling to make it feel like there were birds and branches overhead. No damage to the wall and a clever way to make a room like this look beautiful and custom! I'd use this one in brown with pink birds.

Instead of the ubiquitous college futon I would splurge on this daybed from West Elm (using the school provided twin mattress to save $$) so it could serve as a sofa for friends as well as a bed- leaving plenty of room underneath for underbed storage, which I really needed!

I obviously was in need of more storage than just underbed, so I'd get this Expedit bookcase and put it on the floor lengthwise next to the bed under the slanted ceiling so it could serve as a nightstand and a place to put books and stuff- I'd add a few baskets to conceal clutter. I'd also top it with a cute little light for reading and homework

Can you believe this adorable orange and white trellis bedding is from Walmart?

These gorgeous throw pillows from Etsy are made of vintage dress fabric and are $40! Love them! And with some solid pink pillows from Target they would make a lovely little ensemble!

To feel cozy on the feet on those chilly New England mornings in the old drafty dorm, a sheepskin rug

A graphic Audrey canvas would go on the wall above the bed in homage to my style guru.  Laura mentions that we would probably both have Robert Pattinson posters up considering we both are obsessed with Twilight, even as 30 year olds. I would vote that we go all the way and get the life size stand up cut out to share. So he could serve a purpose (as all items in a small room should) we could use him to keep all our necklaces and scarves on. Thanks Rob!

This fun little mirror would go above the desk to assist in primping for a night out on campus and nearby a little zebra (it is ME after all) bulletin board for pics and reminders.

Thanks for the post suggestion Laura (her room redo here)- I only WISH our room could have looked like this then!

Kindness.

Not only did Seleta post a lovely bit about our meeting and her visit to my city, but I also was sent a gorgeous piece by Diane James Home for my upcoming birthday (it now lives on my bedside table)! Kindness from strangers (and those no longer strangers) makes the world go round!

In With the Old AND the New!

Happy Monday everyone! Hope you all had a great weekend. I hate to report that Brimfield was such a disappointment this year- truly a sea of mostly knick knacks and much less cool furniture than last year. There were some redeeming items (lots of vintage jewelry- my friend Amanda got the coolest antique brooch), and it's always fun to go, but it seems that poerhaps even the economy has hurt antique dealers. I am going to try to go in September, since I think that might be the better show. Anyways a few snaps:

This booth had some great stuff- but a lot of it looked reproduction:

I did love the pair of ceramic dogs though- I just don't need another pair of ceramic ANYTHING!

Jadeite collection:

These industrial bins would look great in a bookshelf or in a kitchen as storage:

A lovely mirror made from old tin ceilings and a bunch of old glass medical cabinets

Grouping of old silverware- these were lovely and having a mismatched set would be so fabulous paired with some sleek, simple china:

This big pig painting would look great above a sofa in a country house;

I adored this twin headboard's unique design, as well as this gorgeous lantern with colver shaped ring accent:

But the best part of the weekend was getting to meet (and imbibe) with Seleta Howard from Simply Seleta and her husband! What a gorgeous, talented, lovely woman (and am so jealous she got to spend the weekend at Eddie Ross' country home)! Yet another reason why blogging has enriched my life so much!

Fashion Friday: Happy Birthday Dear Blog!

It's hard to imagine that two years ago I was writing this with absolutely no idea if anyone would read this blog or ever enlist my services. As I sit here now with a few magazine shoots under my belt, thousands of readers and a huge wait list of clients I am flabbergasted at what's happened to me in the past two years. Who woulda thunk it???? So today I wish my blog (i.e. the best thing I've ever done for myself) a very happy second birthday! Of course, I'd like to throw my blog a kick ass birthday party, and if I did I might have to rock this little outfit- with obvious homage to my signature zebra pattern....

Bloggy Birthday

My Hubby the Blogger

I've created a monster, people. My husband has proven over the years to be a fantastic writer full of good ideas, so naturally I suggested a blog might be a great way to channel his creative juices. Now I have a blogging addict on my hands! The other night this was what our house was like:

(type type type type type)
Me (yelling from my office): What are you doing?
Andrew (yelling from his office): Blogging. What are you doing?
Me (more yelling): Blogging.
Andrew: We are officially losers.

We've even had a blogging related fight (I'll call them "blarguments" from now on). But I do suggest that if you are interested in business or have a friend/hubby/brother who is they might find his writing interesting! Check it out here!

Watch out interwebs, the Gates' are taking over!!

Reason # 58 of why I love my job...

Blogging is the best thing I've ever decided to do (besides starting my company). I"ve met some seriously awesome, cool, and talented people, gained many an exciting client, get to utilize my creativity every day, and because awesome people like Emily at Orange Beautiful surprise me with things like this! ** Or because my BROTHER SENT THEM TO ME WITH NO GIFT TAG! Oy. I feel like an arse. You know what they say about assuming... Well, I change the last reason to "I love blogging because it makes it so easy for people to shop for me".

I came home on Friday to find this beautifully wrapped package delivered to my house...

And inside....

I literally jumped for joy! After posting about them when I first saw them on her blog, I've been thinking about them- and now they are mine! :) ** Thanks Mike!
Oh happy day... will post a pic once they are framed and proudly hanging in my office. I SO need a daily reminder to get my sh*t together.
You can buy them here.

Reader Question: Upholstery Color

I love having this blog as a way to bounce ideas of my "ideal client"...lucky me!
I am finally in the process of redoing those faux bamboo chairs I bought (painting them glossy white as we speak) and am wondering about an upholstery fabric color- I know the most buyer-friendly color would be a neutral- either tan or espresso- but I can't help but want to to put salmon/melon or green on them! Would that deter you from buying? Let me know your thoughts!

Things We Save

Reclaiming Miss Havisham featured my collection of unique objects in her "Things We Save" series, which posed the question "what do you have that keeps your home looking like a Pottery Barn catalog?"....Thanks!!!!

Congrats to Jen!

My blog buddy Jen, an amazing photographer and prop stylist in LA, managed to get her polaroid blog mentioned in Domino and on Martha Stewart's Bluelines blog! A big congrats! For some weekend entertainment, check out her Flickr pages- totally inspirational, peaceful and again only solidifies my need to relocate to LA.

Elements of Erin

Anne at Annechovie sent me a comment after my post yesterday and "tagged" me. The rules are as follows: I need to list 5 random and weird facts about myself on this blog and then tag 5 other bloggers to have them do the same. Well, being relatively new to the blogging community I only have 3 blogger buddies. Isn't that sad? I need to cyber-schmooze more.
There are lots of random and weird things about me, but here are 5:

1) I met my husband on Match.com almost 6 years ago. When it wasn't cool...or normal. And my mother thought I was going to end up "chopped up in the trunk of a Camaro".
2) I was probably the only kid who actually loved lima beans.
3) Everyone assumes I am a neat freak, but am actually a slob. My hubby is the neat one. Creative types cannot thrive in rows and folded stacks- or that's what I like to tell myself.
4) I live across the street from Joey McIntyre's mom. New Kids fans, rejoice. My husband likes to see how fast I can run to the window by yelling "Joey's home!". Andrew's seen him, but never me.
5) I read 5 celebrity gossip blogs first thing every morning with my coffee. Shallow and gross, yes, but hey, it's a better vice than crack.

My three little blogger friends are:
Liza Cohen
Courtney Pyle
Sarah Gemba
