Party Favors

Just a small post regarding wedding and party favors, since I've been thinking about them again with some of my favorite friends planning their own bashes.
For Your Party is the far and away best place to get personalized napkins, matches, coasters, ribbons and the sort. I absolutely love the color, font and style selection. Weddings aren't the only time and place for pretty monogrammed matchbooks....having them around your house to put out in little bowls at small dinner parties is pretty darn chic, if I do say so myself.

One of my favorite wedding favors right now are these ADORABLE chocolate mice with long silk tails, available from LA Burdick Chocolates in Harvard Square. They are hip, cute and delicious all at the same time. You can get them boxed individually or in pairs or more!

And the site that was like, my holy bible for favors and welcome bags I put in each hotel room for my guests, was Bliss Weddings Market /The Welcome Bag Co. I cannot rave enough about their products and selection. You will spend hours going through all the possibilities....customized labels for water bottles....who would have guessed there was a company that did that for you so easily?

Andrew and I have decided to sell our wonderful little condo and I figured I'd post some pictures in case any of my readers happen to be looking for an adorable one bedroom in Cambridge!

Here are some pics:

Cheaper Options for Modern Collectors Items

It's been a while since I last posted...sometimes life just gets busy. But while entertaining a move to a bigger home, I've been on the prowl for some modern design classics that would be worth investing in....but sometimes, cost is prohibitive no matter how valuable an investment it would be. A good, quality knockoff is just a smart bargain! For example, take the ivory leather Mies Van der Rohe Barcelona Chair (left). I would KILL for a pair of these in my living room, but at $6,000 a chair for the original, it's just not going to happen unless Andrew wins the Mass Millions. However, I found a great all-leather replica (right-with the ottoman!!!) for $576 on Designer Seating. Almost identical.
One of the most popular modern lighting fixtures out there is this Holly Hunt Candelabra fixture, which was pretty revolutionary when it came out. Now, you can get a VERY similar version for thousands less from Restoration Hardware!

Introduced in 1956, the award winning Eero Saarinen Tulip Table is still one of the most popular, recognizable modern pieces out there. I've seen them blend in with both very stark, modern decor as well as traditional styles. It creates a great, clean backdrop for any stylish dining chair. The original, sold through Knoll, will set you back $1,400.This version, right, from CB2 is a fraction of that price at $149.

I'm always on the hunt for a bargain....no one will know it's not real if you don't tell them. :)

From around the world...

I am having a very "Eastern" moment in my life...both personally and professionally. An acupuncture, eastern medicine and "hot-as-hell yoga" convert- I am finding myself drawn to all things that originate from the far east. Last weekend during a trip to the Berkshires, I came upon a delightful antique shop called The Library, amass with Asian antiques that Andrew and I completely drooled over (the store much more tempting than the site). This lacquer chair is so unique and gorgeous in person, with it's little under-seat drawers- it would make a great side table or entry way accessory.

And there was a basket full of these pieces of printing blocks, used to print textiles between 10 and 50 years ago, that would look stunning grouped on a mantle as art objects. And how fun it is to own things with such a story and history.

And as a side note, for any of you avid readers out there with any interest in travel, self-discovery and pitch perfect hilarious writing, you MUST pick up a copy of "Eat, Pray, Love" by Elizabeth Gilbert. Quite possibly, the best book I have ever read in my life.

Support a Student

After seeing a group of such bright, young students have their lives cut violently short this week, I wanted to post something supportive and positive for those in the college community. The Savannah College of Art and Design is a wonderful insitution brimming with the design world's next stars. They have set up a e-shop for the students to sell their crafts, from paintings to pillows and handmade candles. It is a energizing site full of unique, beautiful works of art of all kinds. I particularly like the Working Class Studio pieces.

And as a former art student, I can imagine the thrill these kids get when they see their hard work purchased by someone far, far away to display proudly in their home.

I wish everyone a peaceful, happy day.

Not a day for design posts...

In light of the sensless violence at Virginia Tech, I find it hard to post about dining tables and the like...
My advice today: give someone you love a hug. It's a tough world out there.

Everything is cuter in miniature

More rain. It works the last nerve of even the most hardy New Englander. Dreaming of life on the west coast and sunny south- beaches and palm trees, I have come across a nice way to bring a little tropical joy to those of us who live in less temperate areas of the country. I love the idea of having one of these amazing miniature kumquat trees either on my little deck or inside the house in a sunny spot, perhaps even on the dining table as a centerpiece. You can order them from Acorn Springs in many varieties including Meyer Lemon and Miniature Grapfruit. Plant them in either something whimsical such as this pot from Anthropologie or something more clean and modern like these from Smith and Hawken.

Dreaming of cookouts....

While the cold, damp weather has most of us in the northeast pulling our winter clothes BACK out of storage, we can all dream of summer cookouts! However, casual laid back summer dinners on the patio do not always mean boring paper plates and plastic utensils. I found these amazingly beautiful melamine (yes, PLASTIC) plates on Bongenre's website. They are attractive enough to use everyday (and even hang on the wall!) Set them out with bold, solid colored napkins and real silverware and lots of candles and be prepared for your guests to go CRAZY for them!

I digress...

-erin gates, 2000

This post has nothing to do with the curve of an armchair, weave of a rug or the perfect centerpiece...but I just feel like posting some of my favorite inspirational quotes because it's just one of those days. Mother Nature seems to be ignoring the memo that it is springtime, and so the cold, gloomy days of the Northeast spur me to try to make light of this frigid nonsense. And since I am a complete quote addict, it pleases me to do so. Happy Wednesday.

"The secret of health for both mind and body is not to mourn for the past worry about the future, or anticipate troubles, but to live in the present moment wisely and earnestly." -Buddha

"If you are going through hell, just keep going" -Winston Churchill

"Whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should..." - Max Ehrmann

"Finish each day and be done with it. you have done what you could. some blunders and absurdities have crept in; forget them as soon as you can. tomorrow is a new day. you shall begin it serenely and with too high a spirit to be encumbered with your old nonsense." - Ralph Waldo Emerson

"Happiness consists in realizing it is all a great strange dream." - Jack Kerouac

"I beg you to have patience with everything unresolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves as if they were locked rooms or books written in a very foreign language. do not search fo rthe answers, which could not be given you now, because you would not be able to live them. and the point is, to live everything. live the questions now. perhaps then, someday far in the future, you will gradually, without even noticing it, live your way into the answer." -Rilke

"You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face... do the thing you think you cannot do." -Eleanor Roosevelt

Antique prints

If you look around the walls of your apartment/condo/house and still see a framed print of Van Gogh's "Starry Night", now is the time to take it down. In an attempt to replace my reproduced art with real art, I have taken a liking to antique prints: botanicals, eggs, nests, seashells and the like. Groupings of these types of prints look so sophisticated when presented in simple identical frames and mattings.
The best source on the internet I've found for prints such as these is Panteek. It is a virtual library of every kind of vintage print imaginable.
For frames there are endless sources, Ikea always being great for going the quick and cheap route. But check out the Gallery frames from Pottery Barn and the three dimenional box frames from West Elm for a more substantial, modern take on things.

When Old Becomes New

Not long ago, if you had asked me if tapered jeans and leggings would ever come back into style, I would have laughed at you and assured you NO ONE would ever be that cruel...and now, here I sit in my skinny jeans eating my very own words. Sometimes rediscovering old things and reinterpreting them in a modern way makes them seem cool again. However, if shoulder pads come back in vogue, you can count me out for good.

This weekend I spent some finger-numbing time in my parents' barn admiring some items that fit this bill. My father came upon rolls and rolls of vintage Brunschwig& Fils handpainted wallpaper (see above) when one of the company's local pattern designers died. Although some are hard to imagine floor to ceiling, the patterns are so fun and enchanting that I can see taking cuts of them and framing them as artwork (which they truly are). Another idea, to go with my previous nursery post, is to trace animal shapes such as giraffes or butterflies on these papers, cut them out and create vintage wallpaper scenes when applied to bold, solid colored walls. Also, lining the interiors of bookshelves is a great place to try a bold pattern without being too risky!

Another exciting find for me is this asian inspired iron outdoor dining set my grandmother had that no one else seemed to want. I feel like I've seen sets just like this in design magazines for scads of money. For now I can only admire it in the barn, until we relocate to a place with a garden or larger patio. I'll have some great Sunbrella cushions made for the seats and imagine leisurely summer cocktails and cookouts. You can find steals like these for yourself at local antique shops, flea markets and of course, the aformentioned, eBay.
So keep your eyes peeled! If you see a run down chair with great lines, imagine it in a modern fabric with a fresh coat of paint. Something old may be that "something new" you're looking for.

Stylish Space for the Little One

Seeing as I am entering the age group where pregnancy announcements are rolling in from my friends at an amazing rate of speed, I figured that a post about how to create a stylish, cozy but not juvenile, nursery was apropos. A nursery can be a space where you can have inordinate amounts of fun with color and pattern, leaving room for the little one to grow and mature without having to rip off Winnie the Pooh wallpaper border once they realize it's not cool. There are a wealth of hip sites for style minded moms out there. Modern Seed and Modern Tots are two of the best. I am currently obsessed with Dwell Baby bedding (as well as Dwell bedding for grown ups too). The patterns are so fresh and the color schemes very modern (see pic above.) Another favorite, seen below, are the gorgeously crafted quilts by Denise Schmidt. These would look wonderful thrown over a rocker to cuddle up with your new bundle of joy, but cool enough to bring into the living room too. This baby bassinet below looks hip enough show off in any room and would blend in seamlessly with modern furniture .

Using modular carpet tiles in patterns and solids, such as those from Flor (above) can create a great whimsical pattern on the floor which would allow you to keep the walls a solid color that could stay fresh for years. And you can rearrange them in fun, funky ways like a puzzle whenever you feel like it.
Even bouncy chairs a mobiles can look like works of art! Check out this Calder-esque mobile :
And this bouncy chair that looks like it came from the design desk of Kate Spade (brought to my attention by my uber-chic, very pregnant designer friend Julie Richard):

High chairs can be found in wood finishes that compliment and match your current dining set; no need to add a plastic eyesore to a room just because you have a cute new dining partner:

And finding great prints and original works of art for the walls can be cheap and easy too. The Art Farmer has great graphic stretched canvases with bright prints of animals, alphabets and the like.

Finally, no sense in ruining your outfit with a hideously utilitarian diaper bag when they make ones like this!I would carry that now, albeit filled with my yoga stuff instead of bottles and Wet Wipes.....someday Mom, someday.

Ebay Art

I have been wary of purchasing things off eBay ever since an experience a few years back of shelling out decent money for an authentic Gucci "Jackie O" bag, only to recieve a "Fucci" Jackie O bag made entirely of plastic and faux leather. But I have been poking around lately (mostly looking for antique chinese chippendale dining chairs that apparently do not exist) and have been amazed at the selection of wonderfully talented artists using this modern day flea market to sell their works. Today I absolutely fell head over heels for Neil and Karen Hollingsworth, a couple from Atlanta whose talents are awe inspiring to a frustrated painter like myself.

I am eagerly creating my new Pay Pal account to be able to bid on Neil's espresso cup painting for my kitchen....so even though I gave out this tip, no one try to outbid me! But do sign onto eBay and search through the gems they have available for cheap! Real artwork is so much better than a framed poster you still have up from your college dorm room.

The event that started it all...

My wedding. An extraordinary undertaking that produced near perfect results. I learned during the 15 months of planning my event that I had a true passion for the small details- how a silk bow was tied on a program, how I needed the exact right pin to tack nametags to specials pears sought out at a farmers market, how to find someone to hand paint a runner for me with a logo I designed. These elements (ha!there we go again with the name!) are the things that make me tick. I can sit in a stationery store for hours pontificating on the deliciousness of letterpress. Hence my need to add event planning to my business.

And then there was getting published. Inside Weddings Magazine gave me 9 pages of beautiful photos (thanks to M. Benedicte Verley Photography) which made all the hard work worth while.

Circa Trade

Now, for a family "shout out". Circa Trade is my husband's cousin Courtney's fantastic antique store in Hudson, NY, with an equally charming website www.circatrade.com. She is one of those individuals who has clearly had taste and a keen eye for design from birth. Endlessly talented, she fills her shop and site with unique items she collects on her many adventures around the globe. The chinese laquered shutters above are now hanging in my living room, and this stool to the right is on my wish list. Business is booming for her after a mention in my very favorite interiors magazine, Domino as well as the NY Times. Take a minute to look around. It's always best to have something in your home that not everyone sees in the new issue of the Pottery Barn Catalogue.

Inspired Organizing

After a Sunday spent organizing my closets after a whirlwind shopping spree at H&M (which has fantastic things for spring right now), I was thinking about getting my desk ready for my influx of work (wishful thinking?) Then I came across www.seejanework.com, a fantastic site teeming with fabulous, stylish organizational desk accessories. Somehow having a jadeite jar to put your paper clips in and a fabulous wire in-box makes working more fun.

Take a deep breath and jump in...

So, I've got a logo, business cards on order and a dream that this little venture will grow into a career for me. Having been raised by an aesthetically minded architectural designer father and always stylish mother, I feel that I would be denying my heritage to not give this a go. Previous jobs as an art "gallerina", interior design assistant and event planner have lead me to a place in my life where I can take the skills I've learned and focus on the parts of those careers that made me feel inspired and alive...and do it on my own. So here I am. If you have a room that needs sprucing up or a dinner party that needs a little something special, you know where to find me.
I wanted a name that represented how I feel about design, and immediately I thought "I always want to be in my element, surrounded by things that make me smile, that have a story and make me feel at home" So I went with it.
My approach to styling is this: it should be fun. It should be a process. It won't be right on the first try all the time. It should not intimidate you or make you feel overwhelmed and anxious. The desire to create spaces and events that reflect who you are inside and out is why I have started this company. I want everyone to live a life of style, not just the upper crust with the big checkbooks.
So pass this blog along, as well as my e-mail erin@element-interiors.com and hopefully, someday, look for me in the pages of Elle Decor.
